And I Ask You (Chambers)

Story Behind The Song

Born a street away, in the month of May so close

Grew with blonder curls, just another girl that I passed by and you

Strode another path, tuned a different craft, never did we speak not once

In a different place, this familiar face looked at mine

And I ask you to stay for a day

I ask you to stay for the year

I ask you to stay for a lifetime

And I ask you, yes I ask of you...

Where were you when my rage was growing

And where were you when I nearly died

Where were you when I thought it was over

It took so long to find you this second time

Now I can't regret, that we never met before this time

I needed to grow, to reach highs and lows on my own terms and

What I see in you, makes me want to see so much more

Will I get a chance, between circumstance and all that you choose, and all that I choose...

And I ask you to stay for a day

I ask you to stay for the year

I ask you to stay for a lifetime

And I ask you, yes I ask of you...

Where were you when my days were ending

And where were you when I nearly died

Where were you when I thought it was over

It took so long to find you this second time

We fall apart, day by day we wander in apathy

Then I look at your face, happy in life this second time...

I remember meeting someone again in DC that I had gone to school with years ago, but never really knew. It made me think about how people can go through similar paths (school, friends, community) and never really get to know each other. That led to the idea of two people meeting again, but really for the first time, at a point when each has now sufficiently lived to realize that what they were searching for had been there for so many years without them knowing it. What can I say, I'm a sentimentalist...
